Golden Globes Fashion

I had so much fun watching the red carpet with my mama-in-law on Sunday. Between her and the online chatter with her girlfriends, it makes for quite the entertaining evening. About a half dozen women (and sometimes spouses), give or take one or two at any time, chime in on their favorite looks throughout the night. Our facebook thread had over 1,000 comments by the end of the night. Here are some of the most notable looks of the night, with my opinions, because well, it's my blog :)

Best:
Amy Poehler - not only is this woman funny, she's sexy too! I loved the "husband and wife" look that her and Tina Fey pulled on the red carpet. This is one time that pants worked for me!
Claire Danes. Good grief, this woman gave birth a MONTH ago. Stunning, just stunning.
Hayden Panetierre - looking lovely in pastel pink. This could be the best I have ever seen her look - she often has questionable taste. :)
Helen Mirren - can I be her when I grow up? This woman is aging flawlessly.
Mrs. Ben Affleck - ravishing in red.
Jessica Alba - I love every bit of this look - down to the feathered handbag - ok - ESPECIALLY the feathered handbag. Old Hollywood beauty right here.
Julianne Hough. I loved this from the punk faux hawk hair down the the poofy layers of tulle. I thought this was stunning!
Lucy Liu. This was a dress that some of us loved, some of us hated. Me = LOVE LOVE LOVE. I'd like an excuse to wear this dress.
Sally Field. This dress is gorgeous, flattering, and she looked radiant
Tina Fey "Wife" to Amy Poehler's "husband" :)
Zooey Deschanel. I love this girl and all of her retro, adorkable, quirkiness. I thought she looked amazing.
Taylor Swift - who are you and what have you done with your princess dresses? I love this dramatic departure!
Not a best dressed, I just like that these two women actually seem to like each other - because I love them both, even if they choose odd dresses. :)
And now for the fun part - let's judge away folks!

Worst Dressed:
Debra Messing - not terrible, but really, really not flattering. Looking a little trash-bag chic a la Kesha.

Emily Blunt. Pretty girl. Ugly dress. Always a tragedy. I mean, what color is this exactly? Lettuce? Soy bean? Either way - it leaves a bad taste.

Shiny dresses are dangerous. She looks like she should be going to a sci-fi formal.

Eva Longoria - I get it, you are hot. This is trying too hard. She is showing more leg than Angelina, cleavage, and oh, by the way, this dress is basically backless. Cover up sweetie, we know you are pretty.

Guilianna Ransic. It's like a Victorian Geisha on Halloween - or is that just me?

Halle Berry. Again with the leg. Plus the color looks a little like watercolor vomit. AND that top makes her boobs look uneven - most women strive for the opposite.

Jennifer Lawrence. Now - before ya'll get angry here - this dress photographs much better than it films. What you can't really tell from this pic is that her boobs look like they are in Madonna cone bra. I love everything else about this look - the color, the drama, the metallic belt... but I can't forgive crimes against the girls.

Speaking of crimes against the girls, Jessica Chastain. It would be a huge NO-NO to let them look like they are sitting on your waist. I thought the color of this dress was gorgeous on her, but it just needed to be pulled up in the front - those ruffle things are doing her no favors.

JLo - I am having a little deja vu here - Haven't we seen this look on her about a 1000 times? I am over it.

Jodi Foster. It's all just a little severe...

Julia Loius Dreyfus. Just eh. It's a pretty dress - but it is so dull and I don't like how the little waistband cuts her off.

Kaley Cuoco. I love this girl, alot, which makes me sad when she looks so bad. The dress is pretty-ish, but the styling! Ah! Plus, is anyone else sick of nude dresses? Can we bring color back please?!

Kate Beckinsale ran out of time to get ready, so she just grabbed my mom's curtains from 1992.

Kristen Bell. So cute. But the poor little thing looks like she is chained into her dress. If this had been strapless, I think it would have been one of my faves from the night... instead it's got chain mail on the top.

Oh Lady Mary... this dress just confuses me, but wow, she is pretty.

Nicole Kidman. Perhaps she gets the award for "most improved, but not quite there"

Oliva Munn. I don't know why, maybe its the characters she plays, but I really do not like this girl. Plus, she wears stupid tube tops to awards shows.

Rachel Weisz. There is almost too much pretty in this picture, but I really dislike sheer. If this dress were a mini and it cut off when the sheer starts I would love it, probably to the point that I would actually wear it, but the sheer skirt kills it for me.

Rosario Dawson. This photo looks more flattering than any live shot of this dress. It makes her girls look all smushed in and the shape of the dress isn't flattering her curvy figure.

Sienna Miller. Looks like an extra on Rowen and Martin's Laugh In. I really hate this look. a lot.
So what do you think? Agree, disagree? Who would be your best and worst dressed?

And, since I think that I could do better styling than these actors' stylists, stay tuned for later this week when I re-dress some of my Worst looks (because I've got time for that! ha!)

Best and Worst Dressed: People's Choice Awards

It's award show season again! Last year, I kind of laid off the best/worst dressed lists, but ya know, I kind of missed being overly critically of celebrities, so I am back at it again! The popularity contest du jour was the People's Choice Awards - I literally know nothing about this awards show, nor did I watch it. However, I did sufficiently stalk the internet looking for red-carpet photos and boy-oh-boy, if this is a sneak peak of awards shows to come, I am excited!
Black and white seemed to rule the red carpet last night (perhaps as an effort to class up the joint) with the occasionally pop of neon or a pastel (think spring yellow or mint). There were the typical frothy, cupcake-y frocks and some figure-hugging stunners. Plus, the men made quite a good showing!

So, without further adieu, may I present the first Best/Worst Dressed of 2013!

Best:
Critics did not love Ellen Pompeo's white maxi, but I think it is a classy look and flatters her waif-ish figure.

Melissa Rauch looked like a little blonde, busty ray of sunshine. Love it.

Mae Whitman - keeping it classy in an updated LBD. Sometimes simple is the way to go, now only if she had brushed her hair...

Black and white perfection. Regina King looks stunning!

Say what you want about the Willis/Moore clan, this girl can rock a dress. Rumer Willis

Taylor Swift? Is that you? You look sexy for once and not at all princess-y. It's a nice departure. Harry Styles, Conner Kennedy, Jake Gyllenhal, John Mayer... and whomever else you may have broken up with... eat your heart out!

Kaley Cuoco. Critics also were not in love with the peachy, fluffy dress that Big, Bang Theory beauty wore, but I disagree. I think she looks ethereal and adorable.

Men of the Red Carpet:
Let's take a quick look and some of the foxy men who dressed to impress last night.
Eddie Redmayne. Critics said he looked like an extra from Downton Abbey, well hey - it works for me hunny. You rock that tweed!

So, there's nothing really special about this suit, except for the fact that it is on Ian Somerhalder.

Jensen Ackles rocking the aubergine - a fun departure from the standard navy/black/grey.
And just to prove that men can mess up too - even if they are beautiful:
JD Pardo - you may recognize him from Revolution or the half-vamp in Breaking Dawn - but here he looks more like he is wearing a 1920's gangster costume with the cut of this suit. And he's just so pretty... such a shame.
And - drum roll please - the first batch of Worst Dressed!
Erin Hayes. From the waist up - perfection.... the waist down looks like she got caught in a paper shredder prior to her arrival.

Heidi Klum. No, she doesn't look bad at all. I am just sick of seeing her in these dresses. We know you are hot, just stop. Also, the cut out kind of look like open wounds to me - perhaps I watch to many zombie shows...

Karina Smirnoff. Perhaps you could've left the Zorro-lingerie at home and worn a dress?

I don't know who this girl is - but I want to smack her for wearing those stupid gold tennis shoes with that adorable dress.

Kristen Kreuk - early 90's mother-of-the-bride bomb.

Molly C. Quinn. When I saw this I almost cried. This girl is SO cute. Please someone get her a stylist! This literally looks like a bridesmaid dress my mom wore in the early 90's - all the way down to the sheer black hose!

Morena Baccarin. This is one gorgeous woman... this pantsuit/jumpsuit thing is not working for her. It's too long, that swag across the middle does nothing for her. It's just sad.

Good Lord - why is Paris Hilton even allowed out of her house?

Tracey Spiridakos. This one is a huge disappointment. This girl is gorgeous on Revolution where she has minimal make up and usually dirt on her, but give her an opportunity to dress up and this is what happens?  Maybe it looked better in person?

Olivia Munn. This looks like the ugly cousin of Regina King's dress. There is just a lot going on here, and none of it good.

So what are your thoughts? Anyone else stand out to you? Agree/Disagree with my picks? Let me know in the comments!

Best Gift Ever.

I was more than spoiled this year for Christmas, but my favorite gift was the most practical, functional one that I have used every day since Christmas.

A wake up light.

It makes me feel a little old that my most favorite gift was a wake-up light.

Anyway, it has completely changed my mornings. It begins to light up softly, over a half an hour, to mimic a sunrise. Then, at the time your alarm is set for, birds start to chirp. It is supposed to be a more gentle way to wake up and to be less-jarring than your average run of the mill alarm. I am extremely light-sensitive when I sleep, so this has been amazing. I usually wake up before the birds even start chirping. It is easier for me to get out of bed and get my morning started, and for a non-morning person like me, that's basically amazing. I have been able to consistently get to work 30 minutes earlier since I have started using it. I only ever snooze it once, when I used to snooze my alarm 3 or 4 times, then drag myself out of bed only because the dog had begun to roll around on my head to wake me up.
It has been life-altering, really. I would highly recommend this to anyone who has light-sensitivity and is not a morning person. And - a huge, huge thank you to my mama-in-law for getting this for me! :)

A very close second on my favorite gifts of the year was this calendar that Miss AlliFerg got me. Clearly, I love gifts that keep giving!

How about you? What was your favorite gift this year? Are you a non-morning person like me?

New Year's!

Ah – New Year’s – a time to start fresh, have a clean slate, and set goals to have the best year and become your best self.

I didn’t think that I was someone who was big into New Year’s resolutions or having a word of the year or any of that mumbo jumbo.
But… turns out I am!

I am a slave to making lists (it’s like an addiction) and am perpetually striving for more organization in my life, so naturally, I cannot resist the temptation to set goals, make lists, and aspire for even more organization! I have a couple of goals for the year, but the more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea of choosing a word or theme for my year. It didn’t take too much thought or consideration to pick two words that summarize my goals for this new year.

Drumroll please….

My theme for 2013: Health and Control.
Everything I am striving for this year boils down to these two little words.

-          Physical health
-          Cognitive Health
-          Emotional health
-          Control of my finances
-          Control of my body
-          Control of my food
-          Control of my space/time

Physical Health and Control of Body and Food: 2012 was a year of many revelations for me, especially about my health. I started getting treatment for migraines that had plagued me since I was a teenager, which uncovered many other health issues (none too serious, but eye-opening nonetheless). This led to seeing a nutritionist and learning about the type of diet I need to maintain to prevent long-lasting chronic health problems in the future, like diabetes. When someone says, “If you don’t change, in 20 years, you will be diabetic”, you listen.  Thus my goal to improve my overall physical health! I plan to do this by training to run a 5k per month (Starting in February – had a minor setback for January) for the entire year of 2013. I have felt like I am defective, or damaged goods, much of this year and want to do away with this mentality by making my body do what I want it too! This will obviously entail more control over my food and understanding what is actually in the food I put in my body!

Cognitive Health: I am continuing my graduate studies and want to stay on top of these for the year! Plus, I want to maintain my reading goals for 2013 too – I met my 2012 resolution to read 52 books! I even went over that! I am not going to put a number on it this year, but being in 2 book clubs ensures that I will be reading 2 books a month at least. Plus, I’d really like to learn something new this year, like a skill or instrument, perhaps I will finally pick up my banjo!

Emotional Health: This is just to stay sane throughout what promises to be a very busy year. I am going to try to let go a little bit of the “keeping up with the Jones’” attitude that I often get caught up in and just do the best I can for me and my family, and stop striving for that “pinterest perfect” home/life/wardrobe.

Control of finances: Hi, my name is Ashlea, and I have a spending problem. I have surrendered my credit card to my husband already – I did this a few months ago in fact. It has helped immensely to know that I can only spend money I have right now. He didn’t ask me either – I gave it up freely! I think this will come as I work more on the emotional health goal and not worrying so much about what other people have and I don’t.

Control of my space and time: This is going to be a challenge this year because of how busy I expect it to be, but I want to stay organized at home, which will save me time in the long run. I don’t want to have to come home and clean my house to have a clean house… do you know what I mean? I want it to look nice and picked up daily, which will require me to develop some better, less lazy daily habits to make this happen!

Whew – this seems like a lot to strive for in the new year, but I really want these things for a lifetime, not just one year, so it is OK if it takes more than 2013 to get it all nailed down, but it feels really good to have it all out there!

Maybe I will even get around to blogging more!

But let’s not count on it ok?
